neoclassical (1994)

Wynton Marsalis, trumpet; Wessell Anderson, alto sax; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Eric Reed, piano; Ben Wolfe or Reginald Veal, bass; Herlin Riley, drums.

This arrangement features interesting tutti writing that is reminiscent of the writing in the 1949 Miles Davis album Birth of the Cool. The focus of this arrangement is on the ensemble. The importance of ensemble playing and the cool (non-aggressive) playing clearly puts this in a neoclassical category. This music is echoes the melodic style of bebop in combination with the voicings and ensemble playing of cool.
